Kerbey Lane Cafe Turns 33
}

On Sunday, May 5th we’ll turn 33 but we don’t feel a day over 25. It doesn’t seem that long ago that David Ayer and Patricia Atkinson opened the first Kerbey Lane Cafe at 3704 Kerbey Ln. The location was formerly a French restaurant called Cafe Camile. In the early days we weren’t open 24 hours a day. In fact we were only open from 7am-10pm with separate, unique menus for each shift. There were only 9 employees in those days but things sure changed fast. Eventually it seemed like we should stay open later so we kept cooking until 4am. After awhile it just seemed silly to lock the doors so, by 1984 we became a full 24 hour restaurant. Things used to get pretty rowdy at the original Kerbey Lane Cafe on days that the University of Texas football team was playing. We used to have to hire security guards just to keep things under control. Our location on the edge of the UT campus wouldn’t come until twenty years after we opened the doors of our first store.

We opened our second location at 2700 S. Lamar in 1986. It was our first venture into expansion and the store immediately took on the character of the ever-eclectic 78704 zip code. It was sad to say goodbye to this location but after more than 20 years we had outgrown it.

Kerbey Lane Cafe Northwest was our third store, which we opened in 1988. Before we occupied the space it was a Captain Boomer’s Steak and Seafood Restaurant. We didn’t know what to expect with the Northwest store but the neighborhood was definitely waiting for us and we are so glad we decided to open a store in Northwest Austin. Twenty years after opening our first location in that neighborhood it was time to expand to a much bigger store, which serves many more customers.

The UT location was a dream for David and Patricia, who were both UT grads. We have only occupied the space on The Drag for a little over a decade but we already feel like an integral part of the University of Texas community. We have had so many amazing experiences at our UT store and we look forward to being a part of Longhorn living for years to come.

Our fifth store just opened up a couple of years ago. Located near the intersection of Wm. Cannon and Mopac, Kerbey William Cannon serves an area of Austin that is truly expanding. Some people were skeptical and thought that Southwest Austin wouldn’t utilize 24 hour dining, we can assure you that there are 24 hour people all over Austin.

In honor of our birthday our featured pancake this weekend is a Birthday pancake. It’s the classic Buttermilk pancake that put us on the map, with Rainbow Sprinkles in the batter then topped with Whipped Cream and a few more Rainbow Sprinkles for good measure. They’ll be available all weekend at each of our five Austin locations.

Thank you Austin for 33 years of loyalty. We look forward to many more years together.
