Kerbey Queso

Kerbey Queso

We know many of you Austinites are rolling your eyes over the notion of a post about queso but trust us, there are people who will find this helpful! Let’s start with the basics: you may already realize that queso is the Spanish word for cheese, but when you see the word on our menu we’re referring to a cheese sauce. Kerbey’s queso is known throughout Austin for being a white queso that is smooth, creamy and light by queso standards.

There are many ways to get queso at Kerbey Lane Cafe. You’ll remember one of those ways from our post about Migas. By far, the most popular way to get queso is as an appetizer.

Our most popular presentation is the Kerbey Queso, which is a cereal-bowl sized serving of our white queso with pico de gallo and guacamole inside. We serve all of our queso appetizer options with chips and salsa as well. If you want just the cheese itself you’ll want to order our Classic Queso, which is served in either a small or large portion. If you plan to share the queso amongst four or more people, you’ll definitely want to order the larger portion.

Another, highly popular, way to get queso as an appetizer is what we call the Cowboy Queso. The Cowboy is a cereal-bowl sized portion of queso with a scoop of black beans, pico de gallo and guacamole inside. You may also choose to add our Bison Picadillo to any of the options we’ve presented thus far. The Bison Picadillo is a blend of ground Bison with chunks of potato. Seasoned with cumin and chili powder, it really brings our queso appetizers to a new level.

As if these weren’t enough options, we also offer everything mentioned so far with a Vegan twist. We have a Vegan queso, which you can add black beans, guacamole, pico de gallo or even veggie chorizo to. If you are eating gluten-free, all of our queso appetizer options are naturally gluten-free.

So, you know all about queso as an appetizer and you know you can order it as your sauce for Migas and/or the Paris Texas platter, but that’s not where this story ends. All of our enchilada plates come with your choice of sauce, except the California Enchiladas. We highly recommend you try the Bison enchiladas with queso as your sauce or, better yet, choose queso and chipotle sauce and our cooks will mix them together into the most wonderful enchilada topping you’ve ever tasted.

Last but not least, try getting a side of queso with your french fries, homefries or sweet potato fries. We’re not saying this is the healthiest scenario but trust us, at 3:00am when you’re chowing down on one of our amazing burgers, you will thank us for suggesting a side of queso to dip your french fries in.

We’re so excited for all of our new and returning SXSW patrons and we hope you’re finding these Frequently Asked Questions posts to be helpful. See you in a few weeks!
