The Original Kerbey Lane
}

There is no denying that the city of Austin is changing drastically and we’ve been changing with it. However, we also have a reverence for the institutions of this great city and we have seen many of them relocated, or removed completely. Many of you may not remember seeing shows at Liberty Lunch or shopping at the original Whole Foods but we do remember those things and part of the reason those institutions are no longer there is because the businesses were simply leasing the space from a property owner.

On May 5th, 1980, Kerbey Lane Café opened its doors for business, operating out of a house on Kerbey Lane in north central Austin. The owners had the modest hopes of staying open just long enough to fund the pursuit of their “real” passions. Kerbey Lane Café served good, homemade quality food that was local, healthy and affordable. Turns out, that is exactly what the Austin community was looking for. The humble little house has come a long way since Kerbey Lane Café’s first day of business. In thirty two years of operation it has served millions of customers and launched four cafes of the same name in the Austin area. Although the original structure has been rebuilt room by room over the years, it stands today as the cornerstone of Kerbey Lane Café’s operations. On Tuesday, November 27, 2012 Kerbey Lane Café completed the purchase of the house where it all began.

“Over the years a lot of people have just assumed that we owned the building, but that hasn’t been a reality until now. It’s great to have the stability of ownership and know that the original Kerbey Lane Café will always be on Kerbey Lane” said Mason Ayer, CEO of Kerbey Lane Café.

Still owned by its founders, Kerbey Lane Café continues to grow with a sixth location planned for 2013. The quality of food, eclectic mix of employees and commitment to customer service have been the ingredients for Kerbey Lane Café’s success. But without “the house,” Kerbey Lane Café would not be what it is. The company is ecstatic to have acquired this iconic building.
